Mah govt, Mazagon Dock sign Rs. 27,000-crore pact for mega Greenfield Shipbuilding Project at Dighi

Mumbai, Sep 16 (UNI) The Maharashtra government and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) have signed a historic agreement for setting up one of the country's largest greenfield shipbuilding projects at Dighi, in Raigad district, with an estimated investment of around Rs 27,000 crore.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane.
The ambitious project is expected to significantly enhance Maharashtra's contribution to India's shipbuilding capacity and generate more than 90,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The proposed Greenfield Shipbuilding Industrial Cluster at Dighi will be anchored by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
The facility is planned to manufacture both naval and commercial vessels, besides undertaking shipbuilding, ship repair, shipbreaking and recycling activities.
The project is being developed under the Centre's Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster Development Plan and is expected to contribute to the objectives of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
For developing the greenfield shipbuilding cluster in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the Mumbai Port Authority have jointly established a special purpose vehicle, National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Limited (NSHIPML).
Under the agreement, MDL has set a target of establishing a large-scale shipbuilding facility at Dighi.
The project is intended to enable the construction of large commercial vessels and strengthen India's maritime industrial and shipbuilding capabilities.
The project has received in-principle approval from the National Shipbuilding Mission for an estimated investment of ₹27,500 crore.
The proposed shipbuilding capacity has been mentioned as at least 1.2 million gross tonnes (GT) annually in the project details, while the broader project vision has also referred to a capacity of up to two million gross tonnes.
The project will commence after obtaining all necessary statutory and regulatory clearances.
According to Chief Minister Fadnavis, construction is expected to take around three years after the required approvals are secured.
Fadnavis said the proposed facility would be jointly developed by the Centre and the state government and would become the country's largest proposed shipbuilding dockyard.
The facility would have the capability to manufacture both warships and commercial vessels, apart from providing facilities for ship repair, recycling and related maritime activities.
The project is expected to create around 15,000 direct jobs and 75,000 indirect employment opportunities, providing a major boost to the industrial and economic development of the Konkan region.
Fadnavis described the agreement as a major development for Konkan and Maharashtra.
He also acknowledged the efforts of Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane and other members of the state Cabinet in facilitating the project.
The Dighi project is expected to strengthen Maharashtra's position in the country's maritime sector by creating an integrated ecosystem covering shipbuilding, heavy industries, repair, recycling and allied activities.
